St. Gabriel the Archangel is one of the three archangels in the Bible. He is known for his role as the messenger of God, who appears to several key figures in the Bible, and delivers important messages from God. According to the Bible, Gabriel is the messenger angel who appeared to people in the Old Testament and the New Testament on many different occasions. In Gabriel’s most celebrated appearance, he announced to Mary that she would bear a son, who would be conceived of the Holy Spirit, and would be called Son of the Most High, and Savior of the World (Luke 1:26-38). This is called the story of the Annunciation.
St. Gabriel is recognized as the patron saint of messengers, communication workers and postal workers. This is because of his role as the Angel of the Annunciation, who brought the message of Jesus’ birth to Mary, the Mother of God. He is often portrayed with wings, emphasizing his ability to carry God’s word to people.
