I will forego opening this email with the phrases we are all hearing and reading. You know that the entire school community is in my thoughts each moment that I am not thinking about my own family. And I am confident that you all know that should you need anything you only need to ask. If it can be done, we will get it done.
The Memo today focuses on our final preparations for tomorrow and this week. Let's get right to it:
Teachers have contacted you with information on how to access their virtual classrooms;they have likely sent you protocols for communicating, logging on, etc.
If you did not pick up school materials and/or personal items, you will have one more opportunity tomorrow morning, Monday, March 23rd, between 7:00 - 9:00AM; the school will then close until the Federal/State Government or Superintendent reopens schools.
Teachers have or will send you guidelines for academic expectations. This will include timeframes for accessing classes, submitting assignments and taking assessments. Teachers have been asked to be flexible in creating deadlines, but firm in holding students to those deadlines. Parents can adjust the amount of time a student spends online and working on assignments. However, parents are asked to ensure that students adhere to the deadlines.
Make a note of "Teacher Office Hours" and post them somewhere for easy access. This will allow for more timely and responsive interactions.
It is strongly urged that students maintain a routine. This would include wearing their uniform when engaging in video conferencing. They should at least wear their Polo Shirt.
Also, all communication, whether it be typed, verbal or otherwise, MUST be at the standard and expectations of St. Margaret of Cortona School. Our Handbook specifically addresses our current delivery methods and is full effect for the duration of our circumstances. Students will be held accountable should they behave in a manner inconsistent with our values and the values of the Catholic Church. Click here to review, if necessary.
All virtual interactions are public and subject to review by myself, the Regional Superintendent and the Superintendent of Schools. All video conferences are being recorded, posted and saved.
Students are on The Honor System" in regards to completing and submitting their own authentic efforts. Parents should refrain from offering too much assistance. Allow teachers to evaluate the authentic work of students and provide the necessary support in any area in which the student may be struggling.
It has been suggested to teachers that they hold a virtual meeting with parents to discuss the plans and expectations for this week. It is likely that the school will also do this on a regular schedule.
Next, reminder that I will hold Morning Prayers, Pledge and Announcements each morning beginning at 8:05AM. They will be broadcast via Facebook Live. I hope that the entire student body can join me.
Last, I know that I am stating the obvious when I write that these are uncharted waters for an elementary school. We expect a few stumbles and mistakes early on. We are facing these realities and treating them as opportunities to grow as educators. I can state with absolute confidence that our teachers have spent an incredible amount of time preparing for this week. I am so proud to serve as their Principal. You will be, too.
Pray for our country.
Pray for our Medical Professionals.
Pray for our Leaders.
God bless you and keep you safe.
Mr. Keenan, Principal (of the Greatest Catholic School in the Bronx!)
